Color Mixing Bootcamp with Vivian

  • Allende Arts Space 20 Calle Ignacio Allende San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, 37734 Mexico (map)

Workshop description:

Your painting lives on the canvas, but it is born on the palette. Oil painting presents exciting opportunities for subtle mixing and creating delicate tones. However, many struggle to create vibrant color that gets noticed from across the room, or to faithfully capture the colors they see in life. In this short workshop, you will learn how to use your paints to their full advantage. Learn how to get the exact color and value that you want, how to avoid muddy mixtures, and how to apply paint with control. Absolute beginners welcome!

Over two days, Vivian will thoroughly explain value, intensity, chroma, and paint handling. Students will spend the majority of class time practicing on their own to put concepts into action. The workshop will culminate in a short still life painting, where students can put their new skills to the test with guidance from the instructor.

Vivian Tanga is a traditionally trained oil painter who specializes in portraiture. She began her artistic education at the Schuler School of Fine Art in Baltimore. Over a four-year studio art education, she became immersed in the centuries-long legacy of classical painting and draftsmanship. Afterwards, she completed a two-year apprenticeship with master realist painter Will Wilson. She currently works and teaches in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Vivian works in a range of genres and styles, from spontaneous alla prima florals to highly refined portrait commissions. She has won numerous awards over the past decade including prestigious awards from BoldBrush, Richeson and Portrait Society of America.
